1.      General Information about the Department

The focus of Department of Community Medicine is to impart medical education oriented towards Primary health care. The department aims to improve the competencies of students (UG, PG) to provide promotive, preventive and basic curative services. The objective is to develop professional skills of the students for planning, organizing & managing these services with community participation and also to develop skills required to conduct clinical & epidemiological research. The Department of community medicine provides primary health care through its rural and urban training health centres in collaboration with District Health and Family welfare department.

3. Services:

The department of community medicine conducts field training & provides services at field practice area in the urban and rural areas through the urban and rural health training centers respectively. The department staff, faculty, postgraduates, interns are posted to these centers regularly.

  1. Urban Health Training Center: The Urban Health training center Banthikatta at Sadarsofa, old Hubli  is located approximately 4 Km away from the college campus.  It caters to a 3 wards of Hubli-dharwad Muncipal corporation namely Ward 54, Ward 59, Ward 60 with a population of 34300 in 5953 households. UPHC has all the basic clinical facilities, mini OT, essential medicines, day care facility. Staffs, Post Graduate & Interns are posted by rotation in the RHTC. All the National health programs are executed with facility staff including from the department of community medicine KIMS and field staff.

  1. Rural Health Training Center: Rural health training center at PHC Mishrikote, is located approximately 18 kms form the KIMS campus, it caters to a population of 28,608 in 10 villages through 5 sub centers in coordination with 31 Anganwadi centers.

  1. Training and services are also provided by Department of community medicine at Taluka hospital Kalghatagi and PHC Noolvi.
  2. Department of community medicine also runs Immunization clinic, epidemiology unit mainly for surveillance and reporting of malaria cases and investigation of outbreaks.
  3. Health Education on daily basis to patients and patient attenders at ANC, PNC, Cancer, TB, Leprosy, PEM wards in Hospital and outside hospital in slum areas through effective communication techniques.
  4. Training in research methodology, providing consultancy services to Postgraduates and faculty of other departments fordesigning, data management and statistical analysis of research studies.
  5. Co-ordination with district health authorities in implementation, monitoring & evaluation of national health programmes and any other health activities.
