1. General Information about the department:

(Summary about the milestones of the Department , academic facilities, research facilities, staff, various courses and services provided by the department):

The Department of Forensic Medicine provides fallowing facilities: Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology was established in KIMS under MCI regulations on November 1960. Dr. B. Venkatnarayan Shetty had the honor to be the first Head of the Department. Since then, the department has made many leaps and bounds in the world of Forensic Medicine. Currently the privilege of being Professor and Head of the Department is to Dr. Gajanan. H. Nayak.

Conducts autopsies 24/7, has a cold storage capacity of storing 10 bodies, examination of accused in Sexual Offences , furnishing Expert opinion in complicated medico legal cases , Examination of Skeletal remains, issuing of trans gender certificate, teaching institute for UG&PG medical students and also training institute for Judicial officers , Police officials & medical officers. Fully equipped to handle Post mortems during mass disasters. The doctor conducting the post mortem examination and medico legal cases are supposed to attend the Court in related cases for the testimony and aiding in administration of justice. Many of the faculty members are authority in medico legal related cases. In the field of research many activities relating to research are ongoing and the departments related to medical sciences can avail facilities related to cadaver research like surgical skills. Toxicology related opinions are furnished on a day to day basis and is available round the clock.
