General Information about the department

(Summary about the milestones of the department ,academic facilities, research facilities, staff, various courses and services provided by the department)

Established 6 decades back, the department started with 1 qualified staff during the period of 1961-62, catering to 4 operation tables. With the growth of institution more and more specialties were added and the department extended its full support to cater to their needs, and at present, the Department has grown in strength and capacity with a total of 23 staff and 35 Post Graduates and is handling various specialties, Super specialties and intensive care unit giving timely and quality care to the needy.

Besides the anaesthesia services provided, the department also serves the patients with cancer pain through “NIRVANA” – pain and palliative care clinic, which has been taking care of these cancer patients regularly by means of opioid medications, counselling and on occasion interventions.

The department runs 10 operation theatres daily. The department is well equipped with intermediate and high end anaesthesia machines, high end ventilators and all other standard equipments and gadgets including fiberoptic bronchoscope and peripheral nerve stimulators for providing care of the highest quality, on par with international guidelines, and also to carry out research work in the department. Around 9000 major surgeries and 7000 minor surgeries are carried out every year.

Academic work such as conduct of seminars, journal clubs and case presentations are held regularly twice a week for the benefit of staff and post Graduates of the Department, and the seminar rooms are equipped with suitable audiovisual aids.

Research activities including those involving RGUHS research grants, apart from dissertation work are carried out regularly and every post graduate presents a research paper in conferences during his tenure of post graduation.  The staff members also contribute substantially to research work done by post graduates and in some cases, the staff members independently conduct research activities.

Celebration of Ether day and conduction of multiple academic competitions for post graduates on the eve of Ether day are a regular feature of the departmental activities. Faculty members regularly participate in various conferences and CMEs by delivering lectures and participating in panel discussions.
